A well-told funny story is the perfect entrée into social and business situations. Humorous posts are the best way to noticed and followed on social media. Making potential clients to laugh is the first step towards making them actual clients. And with a good quip at the ready, you can diffuse a potentially tense situation.

It’s been said “you can’t teach funny” but that’s not entirely true. Jerry Seinfeld, Woody Allen, Mark Twain, were not born at the top of their game. They spent years honing their craft. Their comedy chops matured over time by watching, observing, analyzing, practicing, failing and learning from their mistakes.

These same techniques are available to all.

This fun class is broken down into easy, bite-size lessons and challenges to help students on their way to mastering the comedy necessities. We start with basic building blocks (i.e. why do some words just sound funny?) moving on to homonyms/homophones and creating puns and double entendres. We will then move to somewhat more complex formats such as learning to respond/react with humor to current events and topical issues (a la late night TV comics), to understanding classic comedy tropes (i.e. The Fish Out of Water, Reductio Ad Absurdum

This 4-week course will help students begin to think like humor writers; to see everyday things from a different perspective; to create an outsider’s point of view for themselves; to learn to identify, save and use the right words and expressions in the right situation, and to understand how the mind of a comedian/humorist works.

There will be some readings, links to videos to watch at home, and fun homework.

At the very least, you’ll have a good time, laughing with your classmates and the teacher.
